The UKAA Festival of Build To Rent 2020

We said "This is going to be big, it's going to be different - your most valuable on-line experience of 2020" and it was!

"I have to say of all the professional online community groups I am a member of, this year the UKAA performed head and shoulders above the rest for engaging, relevant and impactful sessions."

"This is my first UKAA event, and I have to say it has been excellent so far. The whole event platform, the ability to connect with other attendees as well as the quality of the speakers and contributors has really exceeded expectations."

"From the virtual study tours to the various sessions and, the most valuable one, Luke’s keynote. All amazing!"

With over 60 sessions we put on a week long programme bringing you the best in BTR knowledge and experience . The festival of made up of inspiring speakers and through provoking sessions, an excellent array of exhibitors showcasing the best in BTR, fun social activities and plenty of networking opportunities.

Developers, investors, suppliers, brands, and distributors were invited to take part in our innovative weeklong programme, hosted by some of the leading experts in the industry. Our week long virtual festival will took place from 16th November - 20th November and h was specially designed to offer certain solutions in uncertain times, teaching attendees how to learn from, and adapt to the new normal. Our inspirational talks, provoking sessions, social activities, and incredible exhibitors showcasing the best of BTR provided plenty of networking opportunities, whist challenging existing knowledge of property.

We kicked off with two very different speakers headlining the event, Tim Heatley star of Manctopia talked about how BTR is helping transform Manchester and Luke Chadwick, premiership winner with Man Utd explained about how mental health issues stopped him “Living The Dream”.  Four virtual study tours of BTR schemes in London, Manchester and Leicester and panel discussions with frontline staff on managing during the pandemic gave delegates a unique insight into the reality of BTR. The 60+ expert sessions  covered everything from the impact of Esports on design to a masterclass in digital marketing with Rightmove. We also had a  great social programme with networking (including a masterclass in how to network), an online cocktail party and a virtual beer festival, with real beer, plus wellness breaks every day to help our delegates chill and enjoy the Festival.

  • 11:30 - 12:15 Demystify The Psychology of a Customer Referral – APTvirtual

When customers refer a product or service among friends, it’s an act of social belonging, reciprocity and trust. Humans crave social connections and it’s hardwired into our psychology. The emotional reward of feeling part of “our tribe” is irresistible and in order to obtain it, we’ll gladly accept the risks involved in taking social action. But, there’s a limit to what we will do. Trust is at the heart of this dynamic. The attraction of refer-a-friend programs is not only financial; they tap into a much deeper need for social recognition and belonging. Understanding this psychology will help you build better programs.

    Presented by

There’s no crystal ball available that will tell you what the home of the future will look like, but there are key trends which when taken into account will help ensure you’re future proofing your home design as much as possible. We consider these key trends and look into what real estate and other categories are doing to help them stay a step ahead. We can’t tell you exactly what to include in your offer to residents, but we can provide you with key insights and indicators to take into account in developing your unique offer and to ensure you don’t get left behind.

The talk will be given by Brendan Geraghty of Geraghty Taylor and James Fenner of Silk Road Marketing. They have joined forces on a new venture, Optim, which ensures clients create homes which are more aspirational, relevant and valued than what’s produced by companies who ignore the key trends and the evolving customer requirements.

  • 13:30 - 14:15 Masterclass in Service Design with Professor Clive Grinyer RCA

    Presented by

Service design has emerged as one of the hottest areas for both commerce and society in taking a human centred, system thinking perspective and designing beyond products and buildings to deliver the full lived experience. Clive will explain the key principles of service design with some examples from his students at the Royal College of Art and provide some practical and possibly life changing tips and techniques to think like a service designer.

Clive Grinyer is Head of Service Design at the Royal College of Art. For over 3 decades he has led innovation teams designing human centred solutions for companies including Samsung, Cisco and Barclays. In 2018 Creative review placed Clive in their Top 50 and described Clive as “a passionate advocate for the transformational potential of design for some three decades. Today’s focus on the value of digital product design and on design’s value in leading customer experience in the UK is, in large part, due to his work.”

  • 15:30 - 16:30 The Network Advantage – a masterclass in professional networking (J)

Join us for a masterclass in professional networking with Judith Perle of Management Advantage to help you learn how to network effectively.

We all know that networking is crucial. But do you still regard it as an ‘optional extra’? Do you go to events, conferences or parties and routinely come back with new opportunities? And can you always find the right man (or woman) for the job, no matter how specialized the task?

If you understand how networks really work, you’ll be able to capitalise on your communication skills so that you don’t waste opportunities or, worse still, don’t even recognise them. So if you’d like to be able to turn a handful of business cards into something more valuable than wood pulp, you’ll find this masterclass useful. You’ll learn an interesting fact of life from a telephone directory… find out what chain letters can teach us… consult the Oracle of Bacon… explore the paradox of the strength of weak ties… and find out why lumpy porridge is so good for you!

  • 16:30 - 17:30 Speed Networking (J)

Despite the new and significant challenges 2020 has brought, HomeViews reviews reveal how BTR operators have gone above and beyond to ensure that their residents are well looked after. Whether for established developments or for the many new BTR schemes launched this year, the 2020 Awards will reveal those companies and developments that delivered an exceptional experience for their residents in the midst of such unprecedented disruption.

To achieve this, the HomeViews Awards were judged solely on verified resident reviews submitted in 2020. This ensures every award reflects the most up-to-date opinions of residents and celebrates those operators that regularly source reviews and respond to any issues raised.

  • 11:30 - 12:15 A Connection to Tomorrow: Has COVID-19 changed our technology needs?

    Presented by

In January 2020, Hyperoptic, in partnership with SAY Property Consulting, conducted in-depth research to understand technology trends over the last 20 years. We interviewed some of the most influential real estate professionals and polled over 200 industry experts.

We discovered that what tenants and residents really want from technology is choice – and a fast, reliable broadband connection has never been more important.

But how has COVID-19 affected the industry’s technology needs? Considering the idea that COVID-19 has accelerated digital transformation across the board, we’ve re-ran our research to understand the impact of technology adoption in real estate.

During this session, we’ll be giving attendees an exclusive sneak peek into our initial findings before the full report is published in 2021. Don’t miss your chance to preview this crucial insight into the perspective of technology in the current climate – and beyond.
